Sign up to explore our research-ready, curated datasets to address complex issues such as the root causes of poverty and inequality.

Small and Medium-sized Business Datasets

These datasets are based on data from small to medium-sized businesses across the UK. The data is made up of pseudonymised business records from a major UK cloud accounting provider and is accessible at microdata level through the Trusted Research Environment (TRE). It enables in-depth research on business finances nationally and across a variety of sectors.

SMB Monthly Financials

This dataset provides monthly financial microdata for small and medium-sized businesses, sourced from 229,997 small to medium-sized business in the UK.

Among other fields it includes their monthly cashflow, profits & losses and VAT costs.

SMB Payroll & VAT Operations

This dataset contains business records involving how they pay employees, and their VAT information for small to medium-sized businesses. The data is sourced from 77,608 small to medium-sized businesses in the UK.

The payroll fields cover payment amounts, dates and frequency, as well as number of employees. The VAT information fields cover dates, frequency and scheme for businesses that are VAT-registered with HMRC.

SMB Invoices Operations

This dataset provides microdata on small and medium-sized business invoice records. The data is sourced from 160,709 small to medium-sized businesses in the UK.

It contains fields relating to the invoice activity of small to medium-sized businesses, including late payments and amount of cash outstanding. Among other fields, it covers type, due date and amount of invoices, alongside the number and dates of first and last payments, payment status and amount outstanding.

Income and Spend Dynamics

The secure microdata in our TRE is at a weekly resolution and covers the time period from June 2024 to October 2025. It covers around 5 million current account customers across the UK (although predominantly England, Scotland and Wales).

The data is made up of effectively anonymised personal current account records from a major UK high street bank and is accessible at microdata level through the Trusted Research Environment (TRE). It enables in-depth research on expenditure patterns and categories across different demographic groups.

Income Dynamics

This dataset provides microdata on income in consumer finances. It categorises the data into income from salary, benefits, pensions and more.

Spend Dynamics

This dataset provides microdata on expenditure in consumer finances. It includes categories of expenditure, breaking the data down into essential, committed, discretionary and quality-of-life, plus more specific insights into areas such as mortgage and rent payments.

Spend Dynamics Subcategories

This dataset provides microdata on expenditure in consumer finances. It provides a granular view of spend subcategories including energy, fuel, groceries, childcare and more.
